EMDR & Trauma Therapy in San Diego

Depth-focused therapy to inspire meaningful change

You may have built a life that looks successful from the outside while still carrying the weight of the past.

You're the person others rely on. You get things done. You understand yourself better than most. And yet there are still places where you feel stuck — relationship patterns you promised yourself you wouldn't repeat, questioning your worth, losing yourself in other people, struggling to trust your own instincts.

You may understand exactly where these patterns come from, and still feel frustrated that insight alone hasn't changed them.

Old wounds don't always show up as obvious dysfunction. Sometimes they show up as over-functioning.

  • Perfectionism
  • People-pleasing
  • Hyper-independence
  • Difficulty asking for what you need
  • Feeling responsible for everyone else's emotions
  • Being deeply self-aware, and still not feeling safe inside yourself

Therapy can be about more than coping better. It can be about healing the parts of you that learned to survive through adaptation.

You don't need to become a different person. You may simply need the space to reconnect with what got buried beneath everything you've had to carry.

My Specialty: EMDR for Trauma

EMDR Therapy

You may understand exactly why you react the way you do, and the reaction still doesn't change. EMDR helps your brain finish processing the memories underneath, so they stop feeling so present.

Hi, I'm Dr. Laura-Beth Fitzpatrick, licensed clinical psychologist and owner of Inspired Psychology.

At my practice I provide depth-oriented therapy, which means that oftentimes difficulties we experience in the present can be connected to unresolved issues from our past that are being triggered in the here and now.

My approach also incorporates self-compassion work, and shifting that sometimes negative or critical internal dialogue. What's exciting about this is that over time we actually create new neural pathways in our brain — because neurons that fire together, wire together. Over time it leads to a much more empowering context in which to approach life, with new thoughts and beliefs that we didn't hold about ourselves.

I really love this work, and it's an honor and a privilege to be a part of my clients' journey towards healing. Every day the work looks different. That's because therapy isn't one size fits all — it's unique to each person, and it makes it such an engaging process to be a part of.

Knowing when you're ready to come into therapy is a really personal decision. Oftentimes folks come into my office feeling hopeless that change isn't really possible, or maybe they've had a negative experience in therapy before. So I honor the courage and the bravery it takes to come into my office for the first time.

I encourage folks who are new to therapy to check in with themselves when they first meet with their therapist. Ask themselves: is this someone I can feel comfortable with? Is this someone I can feel safe with? Is this someone who really gets me?

Therapy is both a beautiful and difficult journey, so I encourage my clients to trust in the process. It's a commitment to yourself, to creating the life you want to live. And maybe you'll experience some lightness too, from letting go of something that you might be holding on to that's heavy.

If you're interested in working with me, you can easily book a free 15-minute consultation on my website. We can talk a little bit about what you'd like to work on in therapy and see if we'd be a good fit for each other. I look forward to speaking with you, and hopefully joining you along your journey.

I also help with

A few of the things I help people with. If what's bringing you in isn't listed here, you're still welcome to reach out.

Anxiety & Panic

We start with tools and skills for the symptoms you're carrying right now, and then look at what sits underneath them.

Depression & Low Mood

When everything feels heavy, or flat, or like too much effort, therapy is a place to set that down and be understood. We work at a pace that's manageable, and together find your way back to feeling like yourself.

ADHD & Neurodiversity

Support for adults navigating ADHD and neurodivergence, with an affirming approach that works with how your brain actually functions rather than against it.

Life Transitions

New job, new city, a relationship ending, a role changing. Therapy can be a steady place to think while everything else is moving.

Dating

Dating can bring up old patterns fast. We look at what keeps repeating, what you're drawn to, and how to stay connected to yourself while you're getting to know someone.

Post Break-Up Support & Divorce Recovery

The end of a relationship can unsettle your sense of who you are. We make room for the grief, and for rebuilding a life that belongs to you.

Grief & Loss

Grief doesn't follow a schedule. This is room to carry it, make sense of it, and hold on to what matters about what you lost.

College & Graduate School Stress

As a former university counselor, I help students manage the pressures of academic life while looking after their mental health.

Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it.

Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable.

Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.
